GRITIT Service Area Services
Service areas in the United Kingdom, also known as 'service stations' or 'services', are places where drivers can leave a road or motorway to refuel/recharge, rest, eat and drink, shop or stay in an on-site overnight hotel. Presentation and winter snow removal and/or gritting matters a great deal in these areas; GRITIT can help you overcome all these challenges with only one contractor to deal with.
Cleanliness is one of the factors on which service areas do receive criticism, and presentation to users clearly matters. That said, 92 per cent of people told transport focus in a 2018 survey that they are satisfied (compared to 90 per cent in 2017) and 62 per cent of visitors say they are very satisfied. Those who drive for a living are not quite as satisfied at 88 per cent – but this has increased significantly from 84 per cent in 2017. Toilets are rated highly for cleanliness and the number available, but the quality of fixtures scores somewhat lower.
There are also significant differences between the operators across these factors; there is clearly still some work to be done here to achieve a consistent, high standard. The impression of the building is important to customers and in service areas, tends to rate slightly lower than other areas. This is one of the areas that visitors suggested could be improved at some locations, mentioning the need for better maintenance or a refurbishment.
Given that the criticism of service areas tends to be cosmetic rather than functional, GRITIT's advice would be to use white salt rather than grit, and to take on our grounds services as well to make sure the areas look maintained and professional. Clearly a service area is useless if it is blocked by snow or if there is ice on the road making entry or exit dangerous. GRITIT is always prepared for dealing with the winter weather on your service area. Our extensive national 24/7 gritting operation is standing by, and many tonnes of grit are available for your service area gritting needs. We have the local stocks of raw materials, vehicles and manpower to get the service area job done for you.

Service Area Gritting
GRITIT uses specialist transport forecasting services and location specific models to automatically trigger service on our own control software. Close monitoring of road surface temperatures and gritting before the ice can form on your service area is a tried and tested solution for the highest levels of risk management. GRITIT is the largest gritting contractor and has the largest dedicated private fleet of service area gritting vehicles in the UK, with trained and accredited local teams who know and understand your service area and the local knowledge, climate and topography that makes your area unique.
Service Area De-Icing
Pro-active gritting of your service area means there will be far fewer times when the service area needs to be de-iced as the salt is spread before road temperatures reach zero degrees when water freezes. Additional call outs can quickly deal with any service area ice that has formed from escaped water or where later heavy precipitation has washed away the service area salt. If it is an especially cold night and your service area has already been gritted, then GRITIT will come back just before opening and ensure that we also de-ice the service area after a hard frost in the morning.
Choose service area gritting as a continuous service or choose on-demand service area gritting - your call. All part of the GRITIT service. Service area are also one of the important 'front of house' areas that require a high level of presentation. GRITIT recommends white salt for service areas, which doesn't leave a mess so you don't need to go and clean it up afterwards. Brown salt works too - better grip - but it tends to looks a little bit scruffy afterwards and requires an operative to go out and clean it up.
Service Area Snow Clearance
GRITIT's pedestrian and mechanical clearance services for service areas ensure you have safe service areas when you open for business and throughout the day. Or, 24/7 for critical footpaths in heavy use - just tell us what you require.
Service Area Tarmac Repair
In Autumn, tarmac repair is at its annual peak. Potholes and road imperfections are at a higher risk of forming due to a combination of the cold temperatures, poor weather conditions, and heavy traffic which is why GRITIT's advice is to get these jobs done in the summer months, as they'll only get worse every winter. Even on public roads potholes are on the up - the RAC recently reported a 31% increase in pothole-related faults attended by its patrols in the second quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year. With a bad winter in 2017/2018, your tarmac may have a scruffy corner that needs tending now rather than later. Therefore, emergency repairs are more frequent nowadays, and it is important to be prepared for these by using a contractor such as GRITIT who has the correct equipment available for immediate use.
Service Area Grounds Services
And, if you're already a gritting or snow clearance customer of ours, our knowledge of your grounds means we're ahead of the pack when it comes to knowing your grounds and knowing what needs doing.
